Made with creamy avocado and sweet berries, this protein matcha berry smoothie is the perfect morning drink with a kick of caffeine. The smoothie is so creamy and comes together in only 5 minutes! While I love I love it with mixed berries, you can customize it with whatever frozen berries you have on hand.

I’m a big fan of matcha and I’m a big fan of protein. And while I love sipping on a protein matcha latte and a ginger matcha latte, sometimes I want something that feels more substantial. Something that could hold me over for a few hours during a busy day.
That’s where this protein matcha berry smoothie comes in! It’s packed with natural sweetness for banana and berries and is milk-shake thick and creamy thanks to frozen berries and avocado.

why this match berry smoothie will make you do the happy food dance
- It’s easy to make, like just dump everything in a blender and go.
- It’s caffeine and fuel in one. That’s the beauty of combining matcha and more filling ingredients like protein powder, banana, and avocado.
- It’s basically a milkshake that also happens to be a delicious and nutritious protein shake. We like it thick around here - no watery smoothies allowed 🚫.
ingredients
ingredient notes
- The fruit: This smoothie combines frozen mixed berries with half an avocado and half a banana. The banana and avocado aid in a creamy texture while the banana adds a little more sweetness.
- Matcha: It’s super important to use ceremonial grade matcha. You’ll know it’s good quality based on the color - it should be Kermit the frog bright green. If it’s not, the smoothie will be super grassy tasting.
- Honey: Even with all the fruit, I like to add a little bit of honey to help mellow out the matcha. Feel free to leave this out.
- Protein: I use both Greek yogurt and protein milk or a premade protein shake. Some popular ones are Premier shake and Fairlife.
variations & subtitutions
All substitutions are a 1:1 substitute unless otherwise noted. See recipe card for quantities.
- Mixed berries → any frozen berries: You can use strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, even cherries!
- Banana = avocado: You can use a whole banana or a whole avocado instead of half of each. If using all avocado, you might need to add more honey for sweetness. This will make it a matcha berry smoothie without banana which can be helpful for certain diets.
- Honey → agave: Agave or maple syrup will work in place of honey. If you use a sweetened yogurt, you probably don’t need the honey at all.
- Protein shake → Protein powder: You can always use the same amount of milk and 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder in place of a premade protein shake.
- Make it dairy free: To do this, use a Greek style or protein dairy free yogurt and a dairy-free protein shake or powder.

how to make it (with video!)
- Mix the hot water and matcha in the blender
- Add the rest of the ingredients and blend
expert tips
- Heat the water just enough to activate the matcha. This means it should be hot but not boiling. The hotter the water, the stronger the matcha flavor, unless it's too hot and burns the matcha.
- Add the ingredients in this order to avoid them sticking in the blender corners. Hot water - matcha - greek yogurt - avocado - banana - honey- mixed berries - protein milk.
common questions
Yes, just add 1 cup of ice to chill the smoothie. Or, use a frozen banana and fresh berries.
The best way to have a thick smoothie is to not use ice but instead use frozen fruit. Adding creamy and fibrous fruits like avocado and banana also helps!
troubleshooting & testing notes
My smoothie won’t blend!
If it’s too thick and you’ve already scraped the sides down, add more milk. Add it ¼th of a cup at a time, stir carefully, and then blend again. Repeat this until you have a nice creamy smoothie.
What’s the best protein shake or powder to use?
Any kind that you actually like the taste of! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, when making no-bake recipes with protein powder or shakes, the flavor will be front and center so you have to like it. I prefer to use Fairlife protein shakes or Drink Wholesome vanilla powder as a dairy-free option.
storing & meal prepping smoothies
Storing smoothies can be a bit tricky. Here’s how to do it.
- Pour any leftover smoothie into an ice cube tray or silicon muffin tin molds placed on a baking tray.
- Flash freeze them until just frozen, then transfer to a freezer safe Ziplock bag and store for up to 3 months.
- When you want it again, add the frozen cubes to a blender with more milk and blend. It can also be helpful to leave them on the counter for 15 minutes or so to soften. Then you can usually reblend it without hardly any liquid.
This method is also great for meal-prepping smoothies! Some folks prep smoothies by putting all the ingredients in individual bags. But I find that to be tedious and it’s hard to get everything out of the bags.
