what is matcha
Matcha is the powder made from the ground up green tea leaves. It can come in varying levels of quality but in general, ceremonial grade is the go-to for drinks. It boasts as much caffeine as coffee but without the crash that coffee is known for.
This is why it's my go-to drink! Like, seriously I could have a whole album of photos of my daily matcha latte (below are just some of my many).
a basic matcha latte recipe
For a starting point, I wanted to include a basic recipe. Here's how I make my daily matcha lattes.
- Heat 2-4 oz of water (depending on how concentrated you want it) to 176 degrees in a shallow bowl or small cup. Which means it should be hot, but not boiling.
- Whisk in 1-2 teaspoon of ceremonial grade matcha (depending on desired strength) using a bamboo whisk, hand frother, or just a fork.
- Combine with 1 cup of hot or iced milk. You can also froth the milk to really feel special!
For added sweetness (aka how Dan drinks his matcha), you can add 1 tablespoon of honey, maple syrup, simple syrup, or agave.

I love to use protein powder or collagen in my matcha lattes. A vanilla protein shake, for example, adds sweetness, and the vanilla complements the matcha flavor. Sometimes I'll double up the caffeine and add a shot of espresso!

Ok, for the fun part! These are my favorite foods served alongside a matcha latte.
- For breakfast, I like my latte with a protein cinnamon roll, oatmeal pancakes, protein french toast casserole, overnight oats, and waffles.
- For a snack, I will drink my matcha alongside a protein biscuit with jam, protein balls without protein powder, protein tiramisu, or with some everything bagel cashews if I'm on the go.
- For mix-ins, I will often mix this honey ginger syrup or oat milk creamer into my matcha latte.
