I'm a stickler for good hot chocolate. My mom used to make it with milk on the stovetop before skiing and take it on the hour plus haul in the green Stanely to the local ski hill.
So, when bone broth hot chocolate became a thing, naturally, I needed to try it. Turns out, it tastes like chicken or beef (depending on your choice). And we all know I won't be doing chocolate protein powder hot chocolate. So what did that leave? Good old-fashioned milk and egg whites. Like my protein coffee, this one emulsifies the egg whites, so they are safe to drink!

All substitution options are a 1:1 substitution unless noted otherwise.
- Chocolate hazelnut spread: This is an absolute must for the best hot chocolate. Sure, you can try it with melted chocolate chips but it will not taste as good. I like to use the Good Good no sugar added one or the avocado oil-based one from Chosen Foods. Feel free to adjust how much for personal sweetness preference.
- Milk: I use skim milk but any milk you like will work. I will say cow's milk contributes greatly to the protein content, so if using oat milk, coconut milk, or similar, opt for flax protein milk or something similar for the same high protein.
- Egg whites: These get cooked to a temperature of 145 degrees, so they are safe to drink. Use your leftover egg yolks to make rigatoni carbonara or protein tiramisu.
- Salt: Every sweet recipe needs salt; just trust me!
high protein spotlight: egg whites
These are egg yolks' cool counterparts! They hold half of the protein of the egg but nearly none of the carbs or calories. They can be whipped up into a meringue or use to make protein baked cinnamon roll oats.
let's make protein hot chocolate
- Heat: Warm everything up together on the stovetop until heated through.
- Enjoy: Serve 2 big mugs with fresh whipped cream or add a touch of vanilla extract or cinnamon. Maybe some mini marshmallows or a shot of espresso (for mocha vibes) if you're feeling fancy?!

common questions
I'm not sure where we got the idea hot chocolate needs to be healthy or what that exactly means. Yes, Nutella is the cleanest of products, so here are some other alternatives: Good Good, choco haze spread (uses stevia), and Chosen Foods, avocado, oil-based, chocolate hazelnut spread.
For chocolate chips, I like to use Hu since it uses all-natural sweeteners. I don't recommend unsweetened cocoa powder and maple syrup or honey unless you can blend it because cocoa powder tends to clump.
Unfortunately, no, this protein hot chocolate uses egg whites, so you need to slowly heat them over the stovetop to emulsify the egg and make it safe to drink.
No, just leave them out or replace with water.
storage
Due to the nature of the egg whites, this should be enjoyed right away and can't be stored. It's totally fine to travel with it in a thermos as long as it stays at at least 145 degrees. I usually overheat mine to nearly boiling, then add to the thermos to take on the go.

This is a nice way to drink my protein powder on a cooler day, thanks!
Orgain makes a "creamy chocolate fudge" flavored protein powder and it's sooooo good as hot chocolate 🙂
That sounds amazing, we'll have to try it!
