- ¼ cup chocolate hazelnut spread
- ¼ cup egg whites
- 1 ½ cup skim milk
- pinch of salt
Heat: Add everything to a saucepan and heat on low, stirring constantly. I like to use a whisk to fully incorporate everything. Once heated through and to a temperature of at least 145 degrees, you can take it off the stove.
Enjoy: Enjoy with whipped cream right away.
Is there a substitute for egg whites? No, just leave them out or replace with water.
Can I make this in the microwave? Unfortunately, no, this protein hot chocolate uses egg whites, so you need to slowly heat them over the stovetop to emulsify the egg and make it safe to drink.
Storage: Due to the nature of the egg whites, this should be enjoyed right away and can't be stored. It's totally fine to travel with in a thermos as long as it stays at at least 145 degrees. I usually overheat mine to nearly boiling, then add to the thermos to take on the go.
My favorite hazelnut spreads: Good Good, choco haze spread (uses stevia), and Chosen Foods, avocado, oil-based, chocolate hazelnut spread. For chocolate chips, I like to use Hu since it uses all-natural sweeteners, but it won't be as good as it is with chocolate hazelnut butter.
