ingredient notes & substitutions
All substitutions are a 1:1 substitute unless otherwise noted. See the recipe card for quantities.
- Frozen blueberries: I prefer wild blueberries. You can use fresh, but frozen makes the smoothie extra thick.
- Banana: The riper the banana, the sweeter the smoothie! If you have another ripe one you want to use, you can make this air fryer banana split!
- Cottage cheese: This is the secret to making a protein-packed, creamy smoothie without protein powder! If you're dairy-free, swap it for silken tofu.
- Greek yogurt: Adds more protein and a slight tangy flavor. You can substitute with a dairy-free Siggis yogurt if needed.
- Low-fat milk: Almond or oat milk works if you prefer a plant-based option, it'll just have less protein.
- Peanut butter powder: Gives a peanut butter flavor with extra protein but less fat than regular peanut butter. If you don't have it, regular peanut butter works too!
- Ground cinnamon: Adds warmth and depth to the flavor. You can also try nutmeg or vanilla extract for a different twist.

high protein ingredient spotlight: cottage cheese
Cottage cheese is an underrated protein powerhouse! Just ½ cup contains about 14g of protein, making it an excellent addition to smoothies. It has a mild flavor that blends seamlessly into a strawberry cottage cheese smoothie and chocolate cheesecake shake, creating a rich, creamy texture without any graininess.

expert tips
- If you don't have frozen fruit. If you only have fresh fruit, add a handful of ice cubes to get the same creamy texture.
- Blend long enough. Since we're using cottage cheese, blend for at least 1 minute to ensure super smoothness.
- Adjust the thickness. If it's too thick, add a splash of milk. If you want it thicker, add extra frozen blueberries and a few ice cubes, or try using a frozen banana.

troubleshooting & testing notes
Peanut Butter Powder
I made this with peanut butter at first but realized that peanut butter powder makes for a creamier consistency while packing in more protein & less fat.
Cinnamon for flavor
Cinnamon adds a zing to this smoothie that really completes it. It seems like a little thing, but trust me!
