What is a Wake Up Wrap?

Ok, so instead of telling you about my background with the famous Dunkin Wake Up Wrap, I figured I should explain what they are. Wake-Up Wraps are Dunkin Donuts’ version of a breakfast taco. They are tortillas with eggs, cheese, and a choice of protein (bacon, turkey sausage, or ham usually). They’ve been on the Dunkin menu for a while and were a staple of my college experience.

A Dunkin Wake Up Wrap makes the perfect on the go meal for busy days and is also great to make large batches for the kids or friends. So let’s get to making this at home Dunkin’ Donuts Wake Up Wrap recipe before everyone gets hungry!

Ingredients and Substitutions

All substitutions are a 1:1 substitute unless otherwise noted.

Flour Tortilla: I prefer to use 5” fajita size tortillas for these breakfast wraps because nothing drives me crazier than the fillings not fully filling the whole tortilla. Plus, this size is also perfect for grabbing in one hand and your coffee in the other on the way out the door.

Substitutions: You can use any type or size of tortilla you like, such as whole wheat, spinach, grain free, or even a low carb egg wrap. If using a larger tortilla, I have found it helpful to double the filling in each.


Cheese: Ok, I may be in the minority here, but American cheese is the best for breakfast sandwiches – no questions asked. It melts perfectly and each slice of cheese is the perfect size for most breakfast bases, making it the best part of these wake up wraps!

Substitutions: If American cheese really isn’t your thing, you can use Velveeta (next best option), sharp cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, Colby jack, or pepper jack.


Bacon: I always prefer bacon as my choice of meat because it’s crispy and delicious. But here are some other options if it’s not your cup of tea!

Substitutions: Turkey sausage patties, turkey bacon, ham, or any other meat you like can be used. You can also leave this out if you’re not feeling meat at all.


Eggs: I make these with large eggs that are fried because they fit best in a 5” tortilla and I love the crisp on fried eggs!

Substitutions: Scrambled eggs, an egg bake, leftovers from a restaurant, egg whites, or vegan eggs (like Just Egg) can all be used.


Add Ins: There are so many ways to spice up this wrap! You can add in a variety of veggies like bell peppers, mushrooms, or jalapenos. You can also add in sour cream, breakfast potatoes, hash browns, or hash potatoes to beef it up.


How to Make this – Step by Step

Step one: Make the bacon! We like to make ours in the air fryer or toaster oven but you could do this in the oven or on the stove top.


Step two: While the bacon cooks, fry the eggs over medium heat in a large skillet with a little bit of olive oil or butter. Once the bottom is mostly cooked, you can break the egg yolks (if you want the yolk cooked) and gently scramble the yolk within the egg. Then, flip the full egg and cook on the other side. When the eggs are done, leave the pan on medium heat.


Step three: Once the eggs and bacon are cooked, place one egg and one piece of bacon on each tortilla half. I like to break the bacon in half to ensure it covers the whole egg. Top this with one slice of American cheese and fold over the other half of the tortilla.

Step four: Place the tortillas onto the pan on medium heat. Cook one side until golden brown and the cheese begins to melt. Then flip tortilla wrap and cook the other side. Remove from the pan and enjoy or store for later!

Joy Tip!

If you’re making a large batch of these wake up wraps, you can use a large frying pan or griddle to have an assembly line of egg and cheese wraps going. You can also do step 4 of the recipe by placing the filled tortillas on a sheet pan and broil in the oven on low for 5 minutes per side. Just keep an eye on them so they don’t burn!


Facts and Common Questions

Are wake up wraps healthy?

Yes. Some may say bacon and cheese are not, but I disagree. The carbs from the tortilla balanced with the protein from the eggs and bacon are a great source of protein and energy to start the day!

When combining a simple carb, like a flour tortilla with protein you are limiting how much your glucose levels spike, therefore resulting in less of a crash later in the day. Yes, you can make this leaner by not using cheese, subbing turkey bacon, and using a whole wheat and grains tortilla, but that’s no fun is it? **no I am not a registered dietician, just someone who deals with glucose crashes regularly and has a lot of research under her belt**.


What kind of cheese is use on a Dunkin wake up wrap?

Same as ours! American cheese all the way! Although you can substitute many other cheeses if you prefer.


Want to Save it for Later? Here’s how!

Fridge: A leftover cheese wake-up wrap at home is best kept for up to a week in the fridge. Wait for them to cool completely, then place them in a sealed container or wrapped in plastic wrap. When ready to consume, heat them in the microwave for 45 seconds to a minute and enjoy! You could also reheat in the oven or toaster oven.

Freezer: These wraps can also be frozen! But it should be noted that some texture will be lost when reheating them. To freeze them, wrap each one individually in plastic wrap and then place in a sealed, freezer safe container. They will keep for 2 months frozen. When ready to eat, transfer however many you want to the fridge the night before and then heat in the microwave for 45 seconds, or in the oven until thoroughly heated (about 10 minutes).


Fun Fact

For those East coasters out there, you may know some of this already but if you don’t here’s some fun Dunkin trivia! The first Dunkin Donuts is still open in Quincy, Massachusetts. It opened in 1948 and was originally called the Open Kettle. Within 6 years, 5 more Dunkin Donuts were opened.

Talking about growing and evolving, Dunkin Donuts originally started selling Munchkin Donut Holes as a way to use up the center of the donut which was being cut out and wasted. Today 1 billion Munchkins are sold every year (source).

  • 4 flour tortillas 5" wide
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 pieces bacon
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter


  • Make the bacon either in the oven, air fryer, or on the stove top. Set aside.
  • While the bacon cooks, heat a frying pan over medium heat and add butter or oil to the pan. Once the pan is warm, break the eggs into the skillet. Do not crowd the pan, you may need to cook the eggs in batches.
  • As the eggs cook, break the yolk with a fork and gently scramble it while leaving it in place on the egg. Once the whites are cooked, flip the egg over and cook on the other side until the yolks are cooked through.
  • Remove the eggs from the skillet and set aside. Leave the pan on medium heat.
  • Lay out the four tortillas flat and place one egg, one piece of bacon, and one slice of cheese on one half of each tortilla.

  • Fold each tortilla in half (like making a quesadilla) and transfer to the same pan the eggs were cooked in (it should still be hot).

  • Cook on each side for 1-2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and each side is golden brown. Then, enjoy!
