If you’ve ever been to Dutch Bros around the holiday season, you’ve probably seen the Christmas Morning Chai. If you haven’t heard of Dutch Bros then you probably haven’t been to the Pacific Northwest and I’m sorry for what you’re missing. But – that’s why we have this recipe!

We have perfected the Christmas Morning Chai recipe at home so that everyone (west coast or not) can enjoy it! This chai tea makes its mark with the addition of white chocolate syrup. The white chocolate adds sweetness and a slightly caramelized nuttiness that goes wonderfully with the ginger, cardamom, and other warm spices of chai tea.

This chai drink only requires three ingredients and can be made hot or iced! This cup of chai is best enjoyed alongside cinnamon rolls. So let’s get to making this super simple and delicious chai tea!

Ingredients and Substitutions

Overhead view of tea, milk, and syrup.

All substitutions are a 1:1 substitute unless otherwise noted.

Chai Tea Concentrate: Chai concentrate is exactly what it sounds like, it’s concreted chai tea flavor with a little sweetener. These typically come in boxes, similar to nut milk or chicken stock, and can be found next to the tea bags. We use Oregon Chai Tea Concentrate. Chai tea packets can also be used.

Substitutions: While you can use chai tea bags with full cardamom pods and black pepper, the flavor will not be enough to stand out against the half and half. I recommend using chai tea instant powder mix as a substitute or if using chai tea bags, steep 3 tea bags with cinnamon sticks to really amp up the flavor.

Half & Half: Half and half has a higher fat content than whole milk making this chai tea latte crazy creamy!

Substitutions: Whole milk or coconut milk can be used.

White Chocolate Syrup: This is what makes this cozy drink so tasty and sweet! It really sets this apart from other chai drinks.

Substitutions: Vanilla syrup or white chocolate chips can be used. If using white chocolate chips and making the iced version of Dutch Bros Christmas morning chai you may have to heat the milk to melt the chocolate chips. You could also try adding some cold brew for more of a kick too! Other sweeteners such as brown sugar or dark chocolate could be tried but we haven not tested these.

How to Make this – Step by Step

Step one: Add the chai tea concentrate and half & half to a mug or glass. If you want a hot version, add it to a mug and heat it for 1 minute and 30 seconds. If you want the cold drink version then add it to a glass.

Pouring syrup into a mug.

Step two: Mix in the white chocolate sauce until dissolved. Add ice if desired otherwise enjoy warm!

Joy Tip!

This is the fun one! You can pour the chai tea concentrate into ice cube trays and pour the milk and white chocolate over the 6-7 chai ice cubes.

Facts and Common Questions

What is a Christmas morning chai at Dutch Bros?

It is a delicious, creamy chai drink with cozy white chocolate. Dutch Bros makes it with Oregon Chai tea concentrate or powder, half and half, and white chocolate – just like this recipe!

What brand of chai does Dutch Bros use?

The Christmas Morning Dutch Bros drink uses the Oregon Chai brand. While there are many chai concentrates on the market, Oregon Chai is readily available at markets and reasonably priced. Making it great for the at-home version of this drink too!

Is chai tea high in caffeine?

Chai tea has a pretty low caffeine content. It typically contains about one-third as much caffeine as a standard cup of coffee. Chai tea has 26 mg of caffeine per 8 ounces while coffee has about 95 mg.

Want to Save it for Later?  Here’s how!

This drink saves wonderfully! It should not be frozen altogether but check out the Joy Tip above for a fun way to freeze it!

Fridge: This is the most obvious. Have some hot Christmas morning chai left over? Cover it and pop it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat or pour over ice when ready to enjoy.

Freezer: This drink should not be mixed and then frozen as the half and half will freeze differently than the chai, causing it to separate.

Fun Fact

Chai is a combination of black tea leaves with many delicious spices, including cardamom, ground cinnamon, clove, black pepper, star anise, and fresh ginger. Also, the caffeine in tea is absorbed differently in the body than the caffeine in a coffee drink or energy drinks. The caffeine in tea is absorbed slower in the body and has a calming effect on the nervous system. Pretty cool! (source)
